Students will engage in production of digital images suitable for printing and monitor based presentation. Emphasis is on technique, composition, practical color theory, and advanced software topics such as the use of masks, paths, and layers. Students will learn to use and apply transitions and special effects in their video projects. Students will have to critically analyze their movies for content, sequence of events, design and timing. The course will cover the technical and practical aspects of the digital camera, and the use of image editing software (Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, Aperture), covering traditional darkroom concerns and exploring the technical particulars and aesthetic potential of digital photography. This course will present and overview of digital photography techniques as applied to the art of photography. Traditional and new electronic photographic methods are studied as a vehicle to understand the implication of this medium as an art form. Through the writings of artists, scientists, and theorists, and the work of contemporary net artists, we will examine issues surrounding Internet culture: its history, evolution, and impact on art, society, and the human condition. Central to this study will be the identification of trends, issues, and key concepts critical to our understanding of the emerging contemporary net culture. The course will also focus on design strategies, tools and applications used in website production. We will apply this technique to the creation of new forms that are net-specific, as well as those that bridge virtual and physical space. Primary focus is narrative/non-narrative story structures, transitioning, sequencial image making organizational approaches. Historical film and video works, critical theory will be screened and discussed.
