COURSE OBJECTIVES
• An overall understanding of how a color photograph is made, including the relationship between camera, light, lens, film, paper and chemistry• Exposing color negatives: understanding color film and learning to best utilize these materials• Color printing techniques: learning to recognize proper exposure for color prints and learning to recognize color cast and manipulate color balance. Establishing excellent color darkroom work habits• Color vs. Black and White: discussions of the similarities and differences of the two mediums- Developing a photographic "eye" for when to work in color and when to work in black and white• Development of Visual Literacy: the ability to profoundly communicate using pictures and symbols.

A camera featuring manual operation and a light meter
A portable flash unit PROFESSIONAL
Color negative film- budget for 15- 20 rolls
RA-4 Color paper
A notebook or journal dedicated to this class
A small penlightA small calculator
A 3 ring negative box/binder
Lint-free cotton gloves
Fine point Sharpie permanent ink marker
Negative cleaning implements (camel hair brush, blower, canned air)
Dodging tools
Burning cards
Type 000 spotting brush
Negative sleeves and print sleeves
9 x 12” clasp envelopes for turning in assignments
Professional C-41 laboratory
Presentation materials for Final Portfolio (mat board, to be discussed later)

GRADING

Grades will be based on a point system. Students can earn 100 total points. Letter grades will be determined as follows:
92-100 points= A
85-91 points= B
71-84 points= C
65-70 points= D
64 or below= F

30 points: Attendance-
2 points will be deducted for each unexcused absence (each 3 absences lowers your grade by approximately 1/2 letter grade and will hinder your ability to score well in other areas) 15 points: Participation in Class Meetings- (1 point will automatically be deducted any time you are tardy or miss a class)

55 points: Completion of Assignments-
Three assignments, including the mid term, are worth 5 points each The final portfolio is worth 40 points: 12 Points for Portfolio Journal Assignment Due Dates (4 Points each)5 points for the initial presentation on 4/17 10 points for completion of minimum number of prints 8 points for demonstration of skills and practices 5 points for resolution of vision, creative growth and other intangibles

Extra credit: each 36 exp. contact sheet for Portfolio Journal assignment submitted in addition to those required will be worth 2 points.

CRITERIA FOR SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS

To receive credit for completing photographic assignments, prints must be submitted in protective sleeves and in a 9 x 12” envelope.
Write your name, course title, the name or description of the assignment and the due date on the envelope.

Criteria for submission of the final portfolio will be discussed later.

Week 1 - 01.19

Reading: Chapter 2- Photographing in Color, Color Photography (a Working Manual)
Assignment:
Shoot 36 exposure roll - 24 hr period - commercial processing (CVS, the lab) single print set for evaluation (*specify that the film remain uncut)
Bring in items for photograms to next class meeting
